I am SO late to this party.

It’s Larry David, making a cameo on Hannah Montana about 2 years ago. I just found it, and I’m really struggling with how I feel about it.

Those are Larry David’s actual daughters, Cazzie and Romy, who are apparently Hannah Montana fans. Larry David plays himself. He’s waiting for a table at a restaurant, Hannah comes in and jumps the queue, he gets all Larry David about it. His daughter even says “This is Larry David. He created Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm?” Amanda Dobbins on Buzzfeed said,

There’s a lovely West Wing scene where Bartlet doesn’t fire the Attorney General, and Josh worries it will look like he didn’t because his daughter asked him not to, and PB responds: “I think if you ever have a daughter, you’re going to discover there are worse reasons in the world to do something.” Basically that’s the only way I can respond to what’s going on here without yelling.

I almost feel, with Hannah walking in and buttering up the host and immediately getting a table while Larry has been kept waiting, that it’s a deliberate homage to the Chinese Restaurant episode of Seinfeld, and it makes me think “hey, good on you, Hannah Montana writers” — and I never wanted to think that.

But that they make a dorky Seinfeld reference indicates that the Hannah Montana script isn’t written by a computer program or cranked out by a table full of Dan Pattersons like I’d thought. Ignoring that the homage is in a Hannah Montana episode, it’s actually kind of cute that it was slipped in there. It’s like the writers are peeking out from their Disney Channel sweatshop and going “We’re real functioning adults back here! Help us! We can’t breathe!”

I guess it does make sense that the Hannah Montana writers would be Seinfeld fans, since they’re both shows about nothing.

Personally, I’m all for Larry David in anything. I could deal with him hawking McDonalds or insurance, I love him that much. I’m also a sucker for a cross-over, no matter how abstract.
